Another Translation Project: The Apocryphal Gospels In my last reposted-post I mentioned that some years after the Apostolic Fathers (after, apparently, I had forgotten all the pain involved), I took on another (very large) translation project, of wider interest to the world at large — the ancient Gospels that did not make it into the New. Darrell L. Bock. Often today one hears about a host of other gospels that tell us “other stuff” about Jesus. Most of these works come from the second or third century (cf. F. Lapham’s Introduction to the New Testament Apocrypha [Sheffield Academic Press, ], where he works through the various discussions on dates and settings for this material).

Answer: The word apocrypha is from the Greek word for “obscure” or “hidden.” The apocryphal gospels are so named since they were not prominent in the early church.
